While Staunton Chessmen are restricted by a classic parameters, the Ornate designs are free from convention – there are no restrictions on imagination! Our course we insist that our sets meet the same quality standards as others in our collection. The primary difference between our Ornate Chess Pieces and the standard Staunton pieces is the degree of creativity involved – here the possibilities are limitless. Designed in 1920, ironically this is our most ‘modern’ chess set. Our personal favourite is the Man Ray Chess set. The Lotus Flowers pieces are an ornate Pre-Modern (pre-1849 when the Staunton pieces debuted) chess design. ![]() The Contemporary pieces are minimalist and modern – these are the perfect complement to the current popular trend in contemporary high end custom housing design. This take on the pieces is the norm for both casual chess players and tournament chess players in Eastern Europe. The Antipodean set is a classic Staunton interpretation with an Eastern European flair – the top of the bishops, Queen and King are all coloured like the pieces on the other side of the board.
